It was a real honor to receive the endorsements of the Puyallup Public Works Teamsters, as well as the Int’l Brotherhood of Electrical Workers – Local 76, because my career as a police officer was always enhanced by my police union membership. I was particularly excited when my first union endorsement came from the folks who work for our Puyallup Public Works Department because they are the ones who figure out how to keep our water flowing, our sewers clear, our sidewalks accessible, and our roads upgraded … whenever they get adequate funding. One of my priorities on council will be to get our Public Works Department the resources they need to create a modern traffic plan so residents of our city don’t have to spend so much time sitting in their cars.

Receiving the endorsement of the teachers unions (Puyallup Education Association and the Washington Education Association) was another special honor for me. One of the things we’re missing at city hall is a liaison communicating with other government agencies affecting our community, including the Puyallup School District. One of my proposals is to create a Youth Council to advise the city, to show us a vision for the future, and to help collaborate with all the elementary, jr. high, high schools and colleges in the area.

After retiring from the Puyallup Police Department, my second career began when the company that installed solar on my house hired me as a regional sales representative. At the time, I lived next to Clark’s Creek, a house I chose for its proximity to nature and family – my brother’s was (and still lives) across the street on the water. Parks are a top symbol for how good the quality of life is in a community. Puyallup parks are beautiful, and we need to keep making access to nature a priority where neighbors can gather together. Our city buildings and vehicles also need to catch up on the transition to alternative energy as those sources become more affordable. I think these are the reasons the Pierce Environmental Coalition was the second organization to endorse me over the summer, and I appreciate the recognition after trying to be on the cutting edge of environmental stewardship throughout my adult life.

My opponent ran as a Democrat earlier in his political career. Something changed over the past decade, and he is no longer endorsed by either party. Many people in District 1 have felt like he is representing something other than our interests. It’s one of the reasons that I’m running, and I was excited that my first endorsement came from the Pierce County Young Democrats, and later from the 25th Legislative District Democrats which represents Puyallup. This is a non-partisan race and all positions on City Council are non-partisan, so it will be my job to represent everyone in District 1 no matter party, politics, or how long someone has lived here. That’s why I will have a 72 hour rule, making sure I get back to any resident of District 1 who contacts me while I’m serving on council. As a show of my friendships that span parties and politics, take a look below at the endorsements I’m receiving from Republicans, Democrats and Independents in our community.
Individual Endorsements

Heather Shadko, former Puyallup City Council member, has always been known as an independent elected official and dedicated volunteer in our community. Labeled as a Republican by Democrats and visa-versa, she is the non-partisan model I want to emulate when I’m on council. She was always fiscally conservative, caring of the less fortunate, passionate for the health of our parks, dedicated to our wetlands as a volunteer with the Pierce Conservation District, and a true supporter of law enforcement. Heather worked at the Port of Tacoma for many years, and currently holds a position in King County’s Department of Natural Resources and Parks.
